Motoring art exhibition brings 'old masters' and exciting new talent to London this autumn

A host of talented artists working in everything from traditional oil paints to shiny naked metal are set to join the Royal Automobile Club’s Art of Motoring exhibition in London. It opens on Wednesday 29 October in a dazzling display of colour, speed and interpretation.

This is the 11th year in succession that the exhibition – now widely regarded as the leading such event in Europe – has taken place as a highlight of the Club’s London Motor Week, which culminates with the St James’s Motoring Spectacle and RM Sotheby’s London to Brighton Veteran Car Run.

The Art of Motoring is staged in the prestigious Iconic Images Gallery in Waterloo Place, SW1, and entry is completely free to the public until it closes on Saturday afternoon, 1 November.

The exhibition only hangs original works that have never previously been displayed, meaning the dozens of pieces on display are shown for the very first time. The exhibition is open to any British-based motoring artist, either full or part-time, and prices for these unique originals range from a highly affordable £250 to more than £10,000.

The atmospheric paintings of Nicholas Watts will be shown at the exhibition for the first time while the returning Richard Neergaard will be presenting new works featuring laser-cut metal and recycled car parts.

Other renowned names on vivid display again for 2025 are painters Dexter Brown and John Ketchell, along with former 24 Hours of Le Mans winner Stefan Johansson who has swapped his steering wheel for an easel as he forges his imaginative new reputation around the world.

Sculpture as a medium for life-change is dramatically represented by former Formula 1 mechanic Alastair Gibson, designer of the 2024 Formula 1 Qatar Airways British Grand Prix trophies, alongside Robin Bark and Paul Cameron.

Among many female automotive artists will be Ella Freire, whose work sold out last year at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. Meanwhile the superb drawings of Emma Capener and Spain’s Derby-based Ana Herrero are set to captivate once more.

“Every year we’re spoiled for choice in making a great show,” said co-curator and exhibition founder Andrew Marriott. “This year we have two artists returning after a year off to join many established favourites, but the Art of Motoring also exists to showcase new talent, and I guarantee some very exciting newcomers.”

Among these will be mosaic artist David O’Brien, along with lino print-maker Steve Goodwin who was chosen by the Royal Automobile Club to illustrate this year’s poster for the London to Brighton Run.

Said Jeremy Vaughan, the Club’s Head of Motoring, “We love the individual space of the Iconic Images Gallery because it can accommodate the work of more than 30 painters and sculptors in such an accessible way. For our members and their guests, it’s just across the road from our historic Clubhouse, and is a focal point for the St James’s Motoring Spectacle on Saturday which we organise each year – and is also completely free to enter for the capital’s car enthusiasts”.
